Choosing a personal trainer is a bigger decision than most people give it credit for. You are going to be spending time with this person, taking direction from them, and trusting them with your body and your goals. Getting it right makes a real difference. Qualifications

This one is non-negotiable. A personal trainer in Australia should hold at minimum a Certificate III in Fitness, with a Certificate IV required to legally provide personal training services. Most reputable trainers will also carry professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Do not be shy about asking. A good trainer will have no problem showing you, their qualifications. If someone is vague or avoids the question, that tells you something.

Experience That Matches Your Goals

Qualifications get a trainer in the door. Experience is what makes them good at the job. But experience is not just about years. It is about whether their background matches what you are trying to achieve.

Ask what kinds of clients they typically work with and whether they have helped people in a similar situation to yours.

Communication Style

You need to be able to understand your trainer, feel comfortable asking questions, and be honest with them when something is not working. That requires a communication style that suits you.

Some people respond well to a trainer who is direct and pushes hard. Others do better with a more encouraging, patient approach. Neither is better. What matters is whether their style works for you.

A good way to gauge this is simply by having a conversation before you commit. Most trainers are happy to chat about their approach and what working with them looks like.

Genuine Interest in Your Progress

A trainer who is watching the clock, distracted, or running through the same session with everyone is not really doing their job. A good trainer asks questions, listens to the answers, and adjusts what they are doing based on what you tell them.

Over time, your program should change as your fitness improves. If you have been doing the same thing for months with no progression, your trainer is not paying attention.
