Barre is a low impact class for anyone who wants to build strength, flexibility and better posture without pounding the joints. That is the whole point of it. You work through small, controlled movements at the ballet barre, guided the whole way, in time with the music.
Most people who come along are not looking to become dancers. They want to build endurance, tighten up the core, and stand a bit taller than they did walking in.
The class is instructor led the whole way through. Every movement has an easier version and a harder version, so you pick the one your body is up for on the day.
We work through a series of small, controlled movements at the barre, targeting the legs, seat, core and arms. Lots of pulses and holds, using your own bodyweight, paced by the music rather than by counting reps.
Low impact does not mean low effort. The small movements keep the muscles under tension, so the fatigue builds fast and the shake is real.
Pulses and holds that build muscular endurance gradually, using bodyweight and the barre for support. No weights, no bands.
Every movement is paced to the music, which keeps the class flowing and makes the time go quickly.
Every movement gets demonstrated, with an easier and a harder option. If something does not work for your body, there is another way into it.
Anyone, really.
We get gym members using it to build core strength and endurance between heavier training days. We get people who want better posture and flexibility without the joint strain of higher-impact classes. Beginners are fine. You do not need a dance background or any barre experience to start.
If you are managing an injury or a health condition, check with your doctor or physio first, then have a quick word with the instructor before class so they can give you alternatives.

Once a week will help. Twice a week is where people really start to notice the difference.
