We all know that person. The one who started training at the same time as you but somehow seems to be getting results twice as fast. It is easy to think they have better genetics, more time, or some secret supplement. But usually, that isn’t the case.
Success in fitness isn’t that complicated. The problem is that “complicated” sells stories and magazines. The truth is much more boring. It usually comes down to doing a few basic things repeatedly until they stick.
If you are feeling stuck or just want to make sure you are on the right track, here are the five keys reasons that matter.
1. Consistency Beats Intensity
This is the biggest mistake we see. People come in on January 1st and smash themselves for two hours. They are sore for a week, so they skip the next three sessions. Then they quit.
You are better off doing an ‘okay’ workout three times a week for a year than doing a ‘perfect’ workout once a month.
The goal isn’t to destroy yourself every time you walk through the doors. The goal is to build the habit of showing up. If you struggle to motivate yourself to train alone, try jumping into one of our classes. It is much harder to bail when you have booked a spot and are surrounded by other people doing the work with you.
2. You Need to Track Your Numbers
If you are lifting the same 5kg dumbbells that you were lifting last year, your body has no reason to change.
This is called progressive overload, it sounds technical, but it just means doing a little bit more than you did last time. That could be adding more weight, doing one more rep, or taking less rest.
Write your workouts down. If you squatted 40kg for 10 reps last week, try for 11 reps this week. If you don’t measure it, you can’t manage it.
3. You Can’t Out-Train Your Diet
You have probably heard this before, but it is true. You can do an hour of cardio, burn 400 calories, and then put it all back on with a couple of slices of pizza and a beer.
We aren’t saying you can never enjoy a treat. But if your nutrition is rubbish, your training will feel like an uphill battle.
Focus on the basics. Eat enough protein to help your muscles recover. Eat plenty of vegetables. Drink water. You don’t need a crash diet. You just need to fuel your body like you actually care about it.

4. Rest is Where the Magic Happens
Here is a fact that surprises people. Your muscles don’t grow while you are training. They grow while you are sleeping. Training damages the muscle fibres.
Rest repairs them and makes them stronger. If you are sleeping 5 hours a night and stressed out of your mind, your body simply cannot recover.
Prioritising your sleep, can be the best performance enhancer in the world, and it is free.
5. Don’t Guess, Ask
The gym can be confusing. There are hundreds of machines and a million different opinions on the internet about ‘the’ best way to lift.
Trying to figure it all out by yourself often leads to analysis paralysis where you end up doing nothing because you are scared of doing it wrong.
The fastest way to success is to get guidance. That might mean hiring one of our personal trainers to build you a specific plan. Or, if you prefer training with others but still want that coach supervision, small group training is a brilliant middle ground.
Ready to make it happen?
Fitness isn’t a 6-week challenge. It is a long game. If you focus on these five things and stay patient, the results will come.
